Create a Presentation on Fairness in Machine Learning

In the main lesson, you pretended that you were training a computer to recognize a certain item.

You used Google Docs to collect images that represent the topic you selected.

In this extension, you will create a presentation in Google Slides to show why it’s so important that machines train with fair and inclusive data.

You will share the same images you selected in the main lesson, then ask, “What’s missing”?

The excluded images will be at the end so anyone viewing your slideshow can see if they were able to identify the omitted items.

They may have some ideas that you didn’t even think of!

To start, open a new browser window, and go to Google Drive.

Open your Machine Learning journal.

Leave that window open, and open another tab.

Go to Google Drive again, and create a new blank presentation.

Choose a theme.

Add a title ... And a subtitle.

Then, add a new slide.

Title it with the name of the first item you chose in the main lesson.

Then, insert the image from your document.

Go back to the tab with your document, and click on the first image.

Then, copy it.

Return to your presentation, and paste in the image.

If necessary, resize it.

Hold down the shift key as you drag one of the handles to keep it proportional.

Place the image beneath the title.

Great work!

Now, insert another new slide ... And repeat this process for the other four images from your document.

Then, insert a new slide with a different layout from your chosen theme.

In the title space, ask viewers to figure out what has been excluded.

Then, insert two more slides for the images that you had omitted from your original document.

Title them with the name of the excluded images, copy and paste in the images from your document, and resize or reposition, as necessary.

When you are done, preview the presentation to see how it will look to someone viewing it.

When you are finished with your presentation, share it with your teacher, a classmate, or a family member.

See if they can figure out what’s missing -- or if they think of even more examples!

Now, it’s your turn: In two new browser windows, open your machine training data document from the main lesson and a new blank presentation.

Choose a theme.

Add a title and subtitle.

Insert slides for each item in your document and copy and paste in the images.

Add a slide with a different layout from your theme that asks viewers to guess what’s been excluded.

Then, add two more slides with the images of the omitted items.
