In the main lesson, you organized a spreadsheet to plan seasonal activities. In this extension lesson, you will use Google Maps to create directions to your activities.

Some activities might take more planning than others. Before an activity, it’s a good idea to find out how to get to where the activity is taking place. This saves you time and lessens the chance that you miss out on a fun opportunity. When you create directions to your activity, you can save it by generating a URL link and pasting it into your spreadsheet.

When the time comes, you can simply click on the URL link to open your directions to the activity.

To complete this lesson, you will: Create and label a new column in your spreadsheet for directions, Go to Google Maps and provide your starting location and the location of the activity to create directions, Generate and copy a URL link to the mapped directions, Paste the URL link in your spreadsheet, And click on the link to open your directions.

To begin, open the seasonal activities planner spreadsheet you created in the main lesson.

Add a new column in your spreadsheet.

Label it “Directions.”

Now, open a new tab in your browser window. Open Google Maps.

Next, type the address or location name for the location of one of your activities.

Get directions to the location.

Type the address or location name for the starting point for your activity.

For example, you could type your home address, or the name of another location you are leaving from.

For some locations, you might have to choose the correct one from a list.

If the map looks correct, now it’s time to create a link to your directions.

Creating a link allows you to save your mapped directions and access them by clicking on a URL whenever you need it.

Now, go back to your spreadsheet. In the cell of the directions column for the activity the map corresponds with, paste the link in the cell using a keyboard shortcut.

Click on the link. It should open the map and directions you created.

Now you have an easy and efficient way to plan your activities, saving you time and ensuring that you get to your activities and lessening the chance that you go to the wrong location or are late for the event.

Now, it’s your turn: Create and label a new column in the spreadsheet for directions, Go to Google Maps and provide a starting location and the location of the activity to create directions, Generate and copy a URL link to the mapped directions, Paste the URL link in the spreadsheet, And click on the link to open the directions.
